Glyderau Circular Walk via Castell y Gwynt

From the visitor centre, start along the path that runs southeast across the Afon Idwal, then turn right at the junction to head southwest towards the northern end of Llyn Idwal. Follow a path along the north shore, and upon reaching the rocky “beach” at the northwest corner, turn right to join up with a path that approaches Y Garn on a relatively direct western approach. The path is quite steep and significantly eroded in places, so take care especially in poor conditions. Eventually, you’ll reach the level of Llyn Clyd, where the NE Ridge of Y Garn curves around to the left. Follow the main spine of this ridge to the summit, where a shelter awaits for a quick rest.

The next section is a descent to Llyn y Cwn, which is a fairly straightforward southeast walk along another eroded path. Upon reaching the lake, the path skirts around its eastern end before climbing towards Glyder Fawr. The main path leads up a scree chute, which presents significant hazards especially in wet weather. A small stream to your left offers an alternative – either way, you’ll have to work for the summit! Once you reach the top, continue eastward through cairns and boulders to Castell y Gwynt and neighbouring Glyder Fach. Don’t forget a picture atop Cantilever Stone before you go!

When you’re ready to descend, a number of options are possible. A scree path makes a very steep descent down Bristly Ridge—it’s best to avoid this and head instead for the Miner’s Track. Start just left of the Cantilever Stone, where you’ll have to clamber over some boulders before spotting the path that leads you on an eastward descent. You should be nearly at Llyn Caseg Fraith before turning left and following the Miner’s Track to Bwlch Tryfan. If you’re keen on extending the walk, a scramble up Tryfan’s South Ridge is possible here. Otherwise, continue northwest along the path which brings you near Llyn Bochlwyd. Cross the river and keep along that northwest bearing all the way back to the path you came in on, wrapping up back at the visitor centre.
