Bell Rock Loop

Bell Rock is one of Sedona’s defining rock formations, and plenty of visitors make the hike to the rock each season. With views of Courthouse Butte and Cathedral Rock, it’s a stunning spot. One of the joys of hiking near Bell Rock is the easy access to other trails. You can make a loop around Courthouse Butte, head over to scramble up Baby Bell, hike back via Gibraltar Rock on Little Horse Trail- make it your own!

This hike is beginner and kid-friendly as is. If you decide to add on a climb up Bell Rock, there is one section where you’ll need to use your hands a bit. Those with mobility challenges and very young kids may struggle. While the lower levels of the rock are easily accessible, going higher on the rock is best for more experienced adventurers. Of course, you can choose not to climb the rock at all for the easiest trail.

From the trailhead, go straight on a wide path marked on either side by fencing. Large agave plants and cacti also line your trail. At the next junction, you’ll turn left onto Bell Rock Pathway and then right to head southeast.

If you want to climb up the rock first, go straight at the junction with Bell Rock Trail. As you climb up the layers of stone preceding Bell Rock, look for the path of least resistance. People come from many directions here, and on some larger sloping portions of rock, there are various points where climbing up to the next level can be done easily. You can strictly follow the GPS route or just ascend where it looks easiest for you to do so.

There’s a wide, open plateau partway up the rock that gives you an amazing place to look at Gibraltar Mountain, Baby Bell, Courthouse Butte, and Cathedral Rock further on. When you’re ready and you’ve gone as far as you like, return to the junction with Bell Rock Pathway and hang a right.

If you’re sticking to the loop, hike between Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte, enjoying being right underneath two giant rock oddities. At the next two junctions, stay right twice. Go straight through the next two junctions to remain on Bell Rock Pathway. Enjoy the south side of the rock, which is lit up by the sun in the afternoons.

Hike between the rock and the road to the junction with Phone Trail, where you’ll stay left to return to the trailhead.
