Spirit Lake Hike Description
If you are hoping to get your steps in for the whole week, then venture the Spirit Lake Hike. This lengthy excursion, though demanding, is extremely rewarding. The diversity of the Colorado wilderness will baffle you as you hike through granite outcroppings, towering pines, vast meadows and past several lakes. Reserved for experienced hikers, this journey requires preparation. If you are hoping to complete this trail in one day, make sure you set out in the early morning and wear layers as protection against changing conditions. Pack plenty of provisions and a water filter to stay fueled along this trek. Located within the Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), hikers are required to purchase a park pass to utilize the trail.
Embark on your adventure along the Spirit Lake Trail from the East Inlet Trailhead. From here, track east along the East Inlet Trail. Hike along the wooded path, passing Adams Falls and an open meadow where deer and elk are often spotted grazing. As you trek further into the wilderness the trail will begin to gradually climb and intersect with several alpine streams. Hike along the East Inlet Creek, passing several dispersed campsites before arriving at Lone Pine Lake. Follow the path past two small pools to Lake Verna.
Keep your eyes out for wildlife as you track the exposed trail along the lakes. Hike past Lake Verna and you will be delivered to Spirit Lake. Revel in the beauty of the Colorado and RMNP wilderness and dip your tired feet in the chilly alpine water. Notice Tanima Peak in the east, Mount Alice in the northeast, and Isolation Peak in the southeast. Admire the mountainous scenery that flanks the shimmering lake, and when you are rested and refueled, begin your return. When you are ready to head back, simply retrace your steps along the path back to the trailhead.
