Crystal Lakes Trail Description
The Crystal Lakes Hike is a great, but challenging adventure. Reserved for experienced hikers who crave lengthy, backcountry treks, this hike demands stamina. This scenic path ascends high elevations, so ensure you are acclimated to the area’s altitude and pack plenty of water or a filter. Because you are climbing into an exposed mountain cirque, we recommend checking the weather prior to your adventure to mitigate the chances of getting caught in an afternoon storm. It is also a good idea to wear layers, as the conditions at the lake will likely be colder than at the trailhead. Don’t forget to purchase your park pass prior to your hike.
Embark on your expedition along the Crystal Lakes Trail from the Lawn Lake Trailhead. From here, track the Lawn Lake Trail northwest, navigating a set of switchbacks, up to the Alluvial Fan and Horsetooth Falls. The Lawn Lake Trail follows the curves of the Roaring River and will guide you past several dispersed campsites. Continue hiking along the path and you will eventually meet Lawn Lake. From here, hike along the lake’s shores, past the campsites and up the ridge to the Crystal Lakes.
Revel in the grandeur of the looming peaks, noticing Hagues Peak in the north, Mummy Mountain in the northeast, and Fairchild Mountain in the southwest. Crystal Lake presents the perfect opportunity to rejuvenate your tired feet in the chilly alpine waters before beginning your descent. When you are ready to return, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
