Broomhead Reservoir Circular Trail Description
The Broomhead Reservoir Circular is accessible to the public year-round, although that doesn’t necessarily mean that the trail is suitable for all hikers at all times. As the paths are unsurfaced, they can often become quite muddy and waterlogged. As such, it is best to attempt this short walk during the spring/summer seasons when the trail is dry. Additionally, the route can become quite busy at times, so make sure to arrive early to secure parking and enjoy some peace and quiet along the water’s edge.
This walk is perfectly suited for walkers of all skill levels, as the well-maintained paths and scenic views across the water of the reservoir make for a pleasant family-friendly experience. While you won’t have much in terms of scenic countryside views, the forested edge of the reservoir does offer the chance to soak in the tranquil atmosphere of a beautiful woodland setting.
Setting out from the roadside parking area, pass through the gate and make your way southeast along the trail as it leads you into the dense cover of the forest. In 0.3mi, turn right along the trail, followed by an immediate right to make your way along the northern edge of the reservoir. Continue straight along the path for the next 0.9mi as you relax in the serene forest setting and take in some intermittent views across the Broomhead Reservoir.
Reaching the edge of the road, pass through the gate and follow it to the left for 275ft, where you will find another gated path on your left. Make your way through and head back into the forest to continue along the south side of the water. After 0.2mi, you will arrive at a junction near the edge of the road. Keep left and continue toward the east as the trail cuts through the woodland landscape.
In 0.2mi, keep straight through the gate and follow the path until you eventually cross over a bridge spanning a small stream. Shortly after, you will come to another gate just before an intersection in the trail. Pass through this and keep left at the junction, following the trail toward the southeast corner of the reservoir.
Head left at the junction and pass through the gate to walk along the dam wall, taking some time to enjoy the final views over the calm waters of Broomhead Reservoir. Once you have reached the opposite side, turn left to follow the trail back to the parking are where you began the walk.
