It’s suitable for families with active children and also frequented by backpackers bound for the camping spots on the lake.

The trail is rocky and rooty, so good boots are very helpful.

Deer Lake Trail Description

Deer Lake Trail is a fun half-day hike that leaves from the Sol Duc area. This nicely moderate route is quite rocky, but it’s worth it to kick back at the lakeshore on a nice afternoon.

Note that this route begins from the junction on Sol Duc Falls Trail. The access hike to this trail is very short and easy, but plan for a modest increase in distance when accounting for this in your trip plans. The total trip from the parking lot at Sol Duc is about 8.0mi altogether.

Beginning from the fork in Sol Duc Falls Trail, you’ll hike the short, easy section to the falls. It’s worth stopping a moment to appreciate the falls before turning south. Avoid Lovers Lane Trail on your right, instead continuing to head south to climb the opposite valley wall.

Once you’re across the river, it’s a steady uphill climb on dirt and rock switchbacks for 3.0mi. Most hikers will spend about 2 hours ascending to Deer Lake. There are lots of pleasant streams and creeks on the way to entertain you. Stay left at the junction with a spur trail that heads to Hidden Lake.

At the lake, rest up on the shore, have a picnic, take a chilly swim, or set up to camp for the night. When you’re ready to return, you’ll simply retrace your steps back down, taking your time on the rocky descent to the river valley.
