Battle Bluff Trail Description
Due to its amazingly scenic views of the rugged North Thompson Valley and Kamloops Lake, the Battle Bluff Trail is a popular hiking route in the area for outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels. As parking at the trailhead is limited, you might want to consider arriving early or during off-peak hours in order to easily secure parking and enjoy the trail without large volumes of foot traffic. Additionally, the lower portions of this trail can become quite muddy, especially during the shoulder seasons. Make sure to wear proper hiking footwear while out on the trail, both to provide better traction, as well as keep your feet dry and comfortable.
The trail is a popular one in the Kamloops area, but for good reason. This route is a fun uphill climb with several steep sections that will both keep the hike interesting and provide a bit of heart-pumping exercise. From the viewpoint at the top of the trail, hikers can stand atop the rocky bluffs and enjoy a sweeping view across the valley that includes the deep blue waters of Kamloops Lake below, as well as the surrounding mountains that frame the landscape. In addition to the amazing views, the route is also easily-accessible from the city, making it a perfect option for a quick day on the trails.
Setting out from the parking area off Frederick Road, follow the trail south through the grassland and over a small stream. After crossing the stream, the trail will begin to climb gradually uphill through an area of light tree cover. When you come to a junction with the Bluebird Trail, pass straight through and continue your climb uphill.
After roughly 2461ft of hiking, the trail will hook to the right and exit the tree cover into a more exposed section of terrain. Here, the route will begin to steepen, as you make your way up to the viewpoint atop the rocky bluffs. In 1312ft, you will come to a fork in the trail. Take the path to the right for a more direct approach to the bluffs, and you will soon cross over another creek in roughly 1083ft.
Once you have crossed the creek, you will immediately be met with another junction in the trail. Head straight through and follow the trail up the final steep stretch to the top of Battle Bluffs. Once there, you will have a breathtaking view of the North Thompson Valley that sweeps from east to west along the Thompson River and Kamloops Lake. After taking in the scenic views of the rugged landscape, make your way back down from the viewpoint along the same route to return to the parking area where you began your hike.
