Potrero John Creek Trail Description

Indulge in the beauty of California’s Coastal Mountains along this backcountry expedition. Wander along the meandering stream through communities of chaparral shrubs, lush woodlands, and past cacti. As you explore the arid environment, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, including bears, lizards, snakes, deer, condors, and more! Though there is a seasonal creek to cool you off along the way, this route is almost entirely exposed, so make sure to wear SPF and a sunhat—don’t forget your water bottle!

Your journey along the Potrero John Creek Trail begins from the trailhead off Maricopa Highway. Setting out from here, you will be guided north along the Potrero John Creek Trail. This scenic route will guide you through the craggy canyon bound by high brush and seasonal wildflowers. As you climb, you will enjoy the soothing sounds of the gurgling creek and the impressive scenes of the encompassing Coastal Mountains.

Follow the Potrero John Creek Trail to the route’s end, or turnaround when you find yourself getting tired. When you are ready to head back, simply turn around and retrace your steps back to the trailhead.
