South Coast Botanic Garden Description

While it is a fun place to explore, the South Coast Botanic Garden doesn’t offer much in the way of actual hiking; rather, it is a collection of paths that will allow you to take in the well-manicured beauty of a vibrant garden while out for a walk. As this is more of an attraction than a true hiking trail, there is a $15 entry fee that you will need to pay to access the gardens.

Even though it isn’t a true hike, that does not mean that the South Coast Botanic Gardens should be ignored as an option for a fun excursion when visiting the Greater Los Angeles Area. A wide variety of plant life can be found here, as well as a number of educational programs that will teach you about horticulture and wildlife. If you are looking for something to do that the entire family will enjoy, then this is certainly a fun outdoor adventure to consider.

The nice thing about visiting the South Coast Botanic Garden is that there isn’t really one single route that you need to follow, but can instead meander along the intersecting pathways and explore the entire area to your heart’s content. For the purpose of this guide, we made our way around the garden in a clockwise fashion, but feel free to do whatever you like.

From the parking area, the path leads east past the Children’s Garden and Butterfly Garden to reach the well-manicured Rose Garden. At the intersection, keep left and continue along the trail past the Mediterranean Garden, following the path as it loops around the perimeter of the area.

Take your time and enjoy the serene beauty of the gardens, as you walk past trees and open green spaces before arriving at the edge of a small pond. Here, you will follow the trail as it leads into the center of the garden alongside a small stream.

Eventually, the path will turn back to the south before turning northwest, bringing you past the Desert Garden to arrive back at the trailhead where you began your adventure.
