Callander Heritage Trail Description
The Callander Heritage Trail Circular Walk begins in the most fitting of places, right at the heart of Callander, in Ancaster Square. The square has been the lively heart and soul of Callander since it was first mapped out just under 300 years ago, and you’ll find the spirit of the town on full display. After taking in the square, set out to cross Main Street, headed for the South Square, which you’ll find directly opposite the town church. Admiring the exquisite stonework of the old buildings of the South Square, continue the route to take in the lion topped war memorial, which dates to 1920. From the south square, head west down Main Street, taking in historical sites such as Lochiel House and the gorgeous Old Bank. When you reach the corner of Station Road, adjacent to the Dreadnought Hotel, then cross the road headed for the Meadows Car Park. The River Teith comes into view now, making for a lovely, peaceful stretch as you pass Tom na Chisaig ( a flat-topped mound) and continue the brief path heading east from the mound towards Bridge Street. Make a right, and peek over the wall into a graveyard with stones dating to the 1700s.
Continue the trail on the outside of the cemetery, then cross the Red Bridge over the River Teith. Look out for the trail that continues, just across from the Bridgend Hotel, joining a path that passes the McLaren High School. Cross another footbridge enjoying the sweet sound of the rushing river Teith below, then continue past the sundial and Kirk Hall. Walk to the corner of Main Street, continuing on the main route, then cross over to North Church Street, then take the small path on the left along the old railway line. Make a left through the large stone portal, which brings you to the rear of St Kessog’s. A few steps from St Kessog’s, you’ll find yourself having completed the circular walk as you arrive back at Ancaster Square.
