Walking the Cat Bells and Maiden Moor Circular is a rugged, yet beautiful Lake District adventure that will take you uphill along some tough terrain for scenic views overlooking Derwent Water. This trail will see you climb a ridge made up of several fells, including Cat Bells, Maiden Moor before descending the hillside to walk closer to the edge of the water. This is a great walk to build experience and confidence for longer and more challenging routes.

Getting there

To reach the parking area for the Cat Bells and Maiden Moor Circular Walk from the Chalet Tearooms in Portinscale, drive south for 1.2mi and turn left, continuing along this road for another 0.5mi. Make a left here and you will find a roadside parking area on the right in 0.2mi.

The Cat Bells and Maiden Moor Circular Walk is a popular excursion in the Lake District due to its scenic views and tough ridgeline terrain. The route will take you from the parking area at the side of the road on an uphill climb along a rugged ridge that offers sweeping views of Derwent Water. As you walk along the mountainous terrain, you will summit both Cat Bells and Maiden Moor before working your way down the steep slopes to the east. From here, it is a straightforward walk along the valley floor that will take you north toward the edge of the lake, traversing the foot of the ridge until you reach the car park where you started.
