Teepee Mountain Hike Description
Hike up to the summit of not one but two prominent peaks in the Rockies. Located in the northwest of the Kootenai National Forest, this high-country hike offers views into Canada, Idaho’s panhandle, the Yaak River, and the Kootenai River. Note that this route is not well signposted, so using the trail GPS is imperative. Additionally, the exposed and rocky terrain presents inherent challenges, so it is wise to wear a sturdy pair of footwear and sunscreen and dress in layers as insurance against changing conditions.
Setting out from the trailhead, those hiking the Teepee Mountain Trail will be guided northward, steeply climbing up the vertiginous terrain dotted with mixed pines up to the summit of Teepee Mountain. Take the time to catch your breath as you overlook the spellbinding scenery, and if you still have some gas left in the tank, then continue northward across the craggy crest. Minding your footing on the uneven terrain and taking breaks as needed, you will eventually reach Newton Mountain.
Marvel at the grandeur of the mountainous landscape and the dramatic valleys bisected by a wild waterway. Snap a few photos of the beautiful environment, then head back the way you came to the trailhead.
