Swisher Lake to Gateway Boat Camp Hike Description

Discover the beauty of Northern Montana and hike close to the international border on the Swisher Lake to Gateway Boat Camp Hike. This pleasant stroll wanders along the western riverbanks of the Kootenai River, alternating between sections of tree coverage and exposed meadows. Cool off in the river via one of the many beaches, or try your hand at some fishing—assuming you have a permit. As the terrain varies, we encouraged hikers to dress in layers as insurance against changing conditions; it is also wise to wear SPF.

Embark on your adventure from the parking lot off Swisher Lake Road. Setting out from here, you will merge onto the Gateway Road, heading north. Soon after your departure, the path will lead you along the shoreline of Swisher Lake and past the campground. Beyond this point, traffic will thin, though you will likely still enjoy the company of some horseback riders and backpackers. Enjoy the sporadic shade as you wander, and keep an eye out for deer and elk camouflaging in the wilderness. After some hiking, the undulating route will divert you west, down to the riverbanks.

Now tracking north, you will pass the Gateway Boat Camp before nearing the border. Admire the boundary from a safe distance, then head back the way you came to your vehicle.
