Geiger Lakes via Lost Buck Pass Hike Description
Put your endurance to the test on the Geiger Lakes via Lost Buck Pass Trail. This incredible adventure boasts the opportunity to escape the more frequented areas of the national forest to luxuriate in the tranquility of the remote and rugged wilderness. As this route ascends to high elevations, it is worth noting that it is not usually clear of blowdown and snow until May, and the crests usually retain their snow dusting until august. Make sure to dress in layers as insurance against changing conditions. Don’t forget to wear a sturdy pair of footwear to safely navigate the rocky and uneven terrain, and make sure at least one person in your party carries a can of bear spray—just to be safe!
With plenty of water in tow, your adventure along the Geiger Lakes via Lost Buck Pass Trail begins from the trailhead off the National Forest Development Road 6748. Setting out from here, you will be southwestward on the Lost Buck Pass Trail, climbing alongside Lake Creek through the dense woodlands. Enjoy the shade of the tree canopy and the sights and sounds of the cascading creek. After some hiking, the terrain will become more exposed and rockier, leading you past the Geiger Lakes Mine and to the shoreline of the first Geiger Lake. Admire the beauty of the alpine oasis, then climb up to the upper lake.
From here, you will be granted jaw-dropping views of Carney Peak, which towers over the glacial pool. Take in the inspiring scenery and look east for views of the lower lake below. Revel in the grandeur of the Cabinet Mountains, then retrace your steps back down to the trailhead.
