Freeland Stroll Description

While the Freeland Stroll is a fairly easy walking route overall, there are a few points to take into consideration before setting out on your adventure. Firstly, there are portions of the route that will require you to walk along the edge of the road, which could prove troublesome if you are not aware of your surroundings. Exercise caution in these areas, especially if you are travelling with children or dogs. Additionally, certain parts of this walk become bogged down with mud in the winter/spring seasons, so be sure to bring water-resistant footwear during these times.

All things considered, this is still an enjoyable walking route in Oxfordshire that will allow you to take in some of the lovely villages and picturesque countryside areas that can be found within the county. In addition to the natural scenery, while out walking you will be able to spot several lovely churches along the route that tower above the surrounding cottages, providing a constant reminder of the amazing architecture that can be found here. No matter your skill level, the Freeland Stroll is a great way to spend an afternoon exploring the beautiful terrain of the English countryside.

Setting out from the trailhead, walk to the northeast to make your way past the village hall and across the cricket pitch, picking up the trail at Blenheim Lane. Continue on through the gate and head past the cottage, traversing the farmland to the northeast until you reach a stile. Make your way across and continue on through the fields until you arrive at the edge of Marlborough Crescent. Turn right here and keep straight until you reach Churchill Way, making a right to follow the road to the southeast.

Make your way into the village of Church Hanborough and after you pass the Church of Saints Peter and Paul on your right, turn right onto Pigeon House Lane. At the point where the lane bends to the right, you will find a footpath branching off to the left. Take this and follow it to the southwest, as you gently climb uphill through the open fields and intermittent stretches of woodland that characterize the beautiful countryside in the area.

Keeping right along the trail, you will eventually pass by some cottages and arrive at the edge of Wroslyn Road. Turn right here and follow the road to the northwest to return to the starting point of your adventure in Freeland. If you have built up a bit of a thirst, you can pop into the Oxfordshire Yeoman across the street to rest your legs and celebrate having completed the Freeland Stroll.

Insider Hints

  • Check out the Oxfordshire Yeoman pub directly across from the trailhead for some pre and/or post-walk refreshments.
