Chedworth Roman Villa Walk

When you visit Chedworth, you’ll want to take the trail to visit the ancient Roman Villa. The Chedworth Roman Villa Walk is open to the public, but the site itself is operated by the National Trust. You’ll want to check their website for information about admission and hours of operation, as advanced reservations may be required. Please be aware that only service dogs are allowed on the actual site. This route can be muddy and includes some steep climbs, stairs, and stiles, so it is not stroller-friendly.

The trail to the Roman Villa begins in charming Chedworth and takes you into some truly beautiful Cotswolds countryside. Rolling meadows, pastures, and quiet woodlands offer a scenic route to the Roman Villa site. Here, you’ll find a historical treasure-trove consisting of the remains of a 5th-century villa, beautiful mosaics, and ancient bathhouses. Exploring the site and the small museum is an absolute must before you continue your walk!

Start your walk facing away from the church, and go left along Church Row before climbing over the stile. The path will lead you up a hill, over another stile, and up some steps. Continue walking through a gate towards the woods—another gate will lead you into the forest, and then you’ll see a sign for the Roman Villa.

Turn right at the Roman Villa sign and continue walking. You’ll walk under a railroad bridge before arriving at the villa. If you wish to visit the archaeological site, stop here and take some time to explore. When it’s time to leave, take the entrance road and walk to the bridleway sign. Turn right onto the bridleway and continue through the gate to the narrow path beyond.

When the path begins to turn left, you’ll want to climb over the stile to your right. Then you’ll walk through the field, down a fairly steep slope, towards the house. At the house, you’ll find a gate that you’ll go through and turn left along the road.

When you reach the junction, you’ll turn right and walk down to Queen St, which will take you back to the village of Chedworth. At the Seven Tuns pub, you’ll take the path to your right, which will lead you back to St Andrew’s church.
