Ben Vrackie Walk

The Ben Vrackie Walk located near Pitlochry, in Perthshire Scotland, is a popular hillwalk in Cairngorms National Park and features a thrilling climb on a good path to the summit of the peak at 2759ft. The ascent is steep and gruelling at times, but those with a decent level of fitness and a willingness to persevere should fare well. The hill path is usually quite dry, but if hill walking in the winter, ensure you have the proper equipment with you including an ice axe and crampons.

Ben Vrackie towers over the charming town of Pitlochry, found just to the hills north and is a popular hiking destination for locals and visitors alike. The walk invites you to tackle an ascent of 2582ft to reach the summit at 841m, where views of Beinn a Ghlò, and the rolling Cairngorms beyond are nothing short of mesmerizing.

From the Ben Vrackie car park set out up the tarmac road to reach a second car park on the right after about 820ft. From the second car park, you’ll want to join the footpath, which is signed and leads uphill through some trees. Crossing another track, you’ll then continue uphill before turning left onto another track. Cross a bridge and make your way through the woodland, reaching a gate that opens to moorland.

Pass through the gate and capture your first glances at Ben Vrackie up ahead. The River Tummel and Pitlochry provide lovely views over your shoulder as you continue to climb the main path. Another gate leads you to continue making your way uphill, then soon descends, leading you towards Loch a’ Choire. After rounding the corner, you’ll spot the steep path ahead which paves the way for the climb up towards the summit, just beyond the loch. Press on, crossing a small dam and begin the main ascent on stepping stones that climb steeply uphill.

The stone staircase will eventually lead you to the summit at 2759ft, marked by a viewpoint marker and opening to sensational views out to Beinn a Ghlò the Cairngorms. Soak in the moment, as you congratulate yourself for conquering a Scottish Corbett, and proceed with the descent whenever you’re ready.

Return via the same path, heading downhill until you are approaching Loch a’ Choire. From here, take the path that branches off to the right, taking you around the edge of the loch. Stick to the main path, which is waymarked in yellow, and continue to revel in the views, with Blair Atholl up ahead in the distance. When a T-junction is reached, turn left to head slightly uphill which leads you to return to the Ben Vrackie outward path, which you’ll turn right on to head further downhill to return to the start of the walk.
