Ballater Golf Course Walk Description

While the Ballater Golf Course Walk is a pretty relaxed excursion as far as Cairngorms walks go, there is one stretch of trail that could prove troublesome for less mobile walkers. As much of the trail is situated along the banks of the River Dee, it is often subject to flooding. This has had the effect of making some of the terrain under foot fairly rough and rugged, so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes for this adventure. Additionally, the location of the trail on the edge of a golf course means that you will need to keep an eye out for any stray golf balls that might accidentally come your way.

Even with the rough patch of terrain on the back half of the trail, this is an amazing walk that is perfectly suited for families and beginners that are looking to enjoy the beauty of Cairngorms National Park without undertaking a major adventure. Along the trail, you will experience beautiful views of the surrounding hills, a lovely riverside setting and have the chance to explore the main street of Ballater with its lovely shops. What a great way to spend an afternoon on the weekend!

Setting out from the car park, head northwest along Braemar Road for 0.1mi and turn left onto Invercauld Road. Follow this for 420ft and turn right onto Dundarroch Road, continuing on for 0.3mi to pass through the Riverside Car Park and arrive at the banks of the River Dee. From here, turn left and follow the path alongside the river, enjoying the peaceful setting as you meander along its winding banks for the next 1.2mi.

As you stroll along the edge of the water, take some time to admire the human-made beauty of the golf course and surrounding natural beauty of Cairngorms National Park before you arrive at the edge of the Ballater Caravan Park. Follow the track to the northeast for 0.2mi and turn left, following Dee Street for a short distance before making a right onto Dee Bank Road. After 350ft, turn left and make your way through the centre of town, gazing into the shop windows, restaurants, and cafes on your return to the car park where you began the Ballater Golf Course Walk.

Insider Hints

  • There is a portion of the trail that has become a bit uneven under foot due to flooding along the banks of the river. Wear comfortable shoes along the trail.

  • As the trail encircles a golf course, remain aware of your surroundings and be courteous to any golfers in the area.

  • If you are planning on travelling with a canine companion, be sure to keep them on a lead.
