Llyn y Fan Fawr Walk

Although the Llyn y Fan Fawr Walk isn’t overly long, the route does traverse some rugged terrain on the way leading up to and down from the lake. Be sure to wear proper walking boots in order to better traverse the often boggy ground. Additionally, you will want to arrive early in order to secure parking, as the car park is fairly small. Lastly, the trail can be fairly faint in places, so you should always bring a map and compass to help with navigation.

The terrain leading up to Llyn y Fan Fawr may be a bit rough, but the views from the top of the trail are absolutely breathtaking. After traversing the hillside, you will be greeted with stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains, as well as the picturesque Welsh landscape further afield. This spot would make for a great wild camping destination if you are looking to spend a few days exploring Brecon Beacons National Park.

Setting out from the car park, you will make your way west along the trail for 0.4mi, climbing uphill across the barren landscape to arrive at a junction in the path. Head left and make your way across the banks of the River Tawe, keeping left for the next 0.8mi to cross over Nant y Llyn and arrive at the shores of Llyn y Fan Fawr.

After arriving at the shores of the lake, you will have an amazing view of the Carmarthen Fans before you, with the summit of Fan Brycheiniog towering over the water. Spend some time exploring the beautifully scenic terrain around the lake and take in the views of the surrounding landscape, before heading northeast along the trail. Eventually, the trail will meet back up with your initial route up the hillside, at which point, you can simply follow the trail back down to the car park having completed the Llyn y Fan Fawr Walk.

Located in the western corner of Brecon Beacons National Park, the Carmarthen Fans are several peaks that form a ridge. The formation is a popular destination for walkers in Wales, as it offers breathtaking views looking out over the surrounding lakes, mountains, and valleys. The ridge is comprised of Waun Lefrith, Picws Du (also known as Bannau Sir Gaer) and Fan Feol in the centre of the ridge, and Fan Brycheiniog. Fan Brycheiniog is the highest peak among them at 2631ft above sea level.
