Difficulty Rating:
Smith Lake is an often-forgotten lake that is nestled in the forest at Castle Junction. It is a stunning green-blue colour and a great place for fishing. Nearby Copper Lake is only a 0.4mi side trail that is a must-see on this route. If you are looking for a quick walk in the woods, this is a wonderful option.
Getting there
From the Trans-Canada Highway, take the exit for Castle Junction. Turn south joining the highway for Radium Hot Springs (93S). Take an immediate left onto the ramp that leads to the eastbound lanes. You will cross into a road with a sign for Smith Lake. This can be difficult to make the turn. If you miss it, keep driving and turn around when safe. Take the Banff exit and turn into the Smith Lake road and parking lot.

Smith Lake Trail Description
From the parking lot, cross the bridge over the creek and come to a junction after 656ft. Take the trail to the left for Copper Lake. This is a very short detour of 1969ft and a must do when making the trip to Smith Lake. Take in the scenery at Copper Lake and head back to the junction. 656ft from the junction, you will reach another. Head left for Smith Lake. The trail to the right connects with Twin Lakes.
Follow the Smith Lake trail as it gains elevation through the forest. This trail is rarely visited and is a quiet and calm trail to enjoy time in the wilderness. After roughly 0.9mi, you will come to a crest in the woods and be able to see Smith Lake below. Descend the steep hill 328ft to the shores, where you can cast a line or relax in the solitude of this quaint lake. Return the way you came.
