The Lani White and Hunter Valley Loop Trail is a stunning adventure that reveals epic views of the mountainous landscape and the vibrant forestlands. Accessible year-round, this route can easily be enjoyed in the winter months, just strap on a pair of snowshoes or microspikes! Scenic and picturesque all year, our favorite time to venture this trek is in the autumn when the aspens are at their peak vibrance. Embark on your adventure along the Lani White and Hunter Valley Loop Trail from the Lower Hunter Creek Trailhead. From here, track northeast along the Lower Hunter Creek Trail through a sea of golden aspens and along Hunter Creek. Mind your footing as you trek over the rocky terrain along the gurgling waters of the stream. Intersecting with the creek on numerous occasions, you will be guided over boardwalks and log bridges. Continue trekking north along the path and you will eventually confront an intersection.

At this point, hikers will want to turn left onto the Hunter Valley Trail. As you make your way through the semi-exposed valley you will be rewarded with sights of lush cottonwood trees and wonderful mountain views. Weaving between luxuriant meadowlands and tree shade the trail will continue to intersect with branches of Hunter Creek. Eventually, you will encounter a junction with the Iowa Shaft Trail, where you will turn right. Tracking the Iowa Shaft Trail south past several historic mines, make sure to keep your distance from open shafts and be sure to read the interpretive signs that narrate the history of the important infrastructure. Passing Saint Joe Mine first you will meet the Iowa Shaft before turning right onto the Smuggler Cutoff Road.

Follow this route west to the Smuggler Mountain Observation Deck. Revel in the sights of Colorado’s mountainous landscape and the bustling city of Aspen below. From here, merge onto the Smuggler Mountain Road through golden aspen groves and past dozens of mine sites to the route’s end. At this point, take the Mollie Gibson Trail north onto Free Silver Court before merging onto the Lani White Trail. Hike the Lani White Trail up to an intersection with Lower Hunter Creek Road. From here, turn left onto the Lower Hunter Creek Trail and retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
