This is one of the easiest hikes of the Amalfi Coast, yet it’s still full of nature and history. Thanks to its short distance, this is a great trail to walk with the entire family.

Route Description for Valle dei Mulini

From the Amalfi Dome, go straight through the main road “Via Pietro Capuano”, which short after will become “Via delle Cartiere”. On these roads, you will already find signs for “Valle dei Mulini”.

Once you are near the Paper Mill Museum, there you will find an uphill road and other signs for “Valle delle Ferriere” and “Valle dei Mulini”.

From here you hike on a well-paved path, surrounded by old buildings and lemon trees. After 1km the pavement will end and you will enter the forest, hearing the delicate splash of Canneto River, flowing in the valley below.

After a short walk you’ll begin to see something quite fascinating: ancient abandoned houses covered by plants. Those once were paper mills that took advantage of the river to produce the once famous Amalfi paper. You may be able to cautiously go inside some of them, but pay attention. Some bats may have made these old mills their new home!

A few steps and mills later, you are in the wild, at the same level as the river with beautiful falls one after another. You’ll pass some more ruins as you continue uphill. Past them, there is a signboard that says “Sentiero Giustino Fortunato”. From there, continue the path as it climbs until you reach a metallic fence. Open the door in the fence and go on. After few meters, you’ll be surrounded by strange falls and plants unique to this area.

You can continue along the path a bit longer to the gorge with more falls and river views until the trail ends.

After that, return the way you came.

Insider Hints

  • The first part of the path is very exposed to the sun during the day. Make sure you have protection from the sun to avoid sunburns.

  • To get here by bus from Sorrento and Naples you can take buses for Amalfi if you don’t want to weave along the small roads.

  • This is a good hike for those who are new to hiking and for those who hike with kids. Although do be careful in the old mills with the kids. There are areas where they could get lost or spooked!
