This New York City walk is all about the journey – not the destination. Here you’ll walk past some of the best restaurants, cafes and shops in New York City. The route will take you down into Greenwich Village, through SoHo, Chinatown, and Little Italy. You won’t see many of the “big city sights here”, but rather great atmosphere, pleasant brick streets, beautiful architecture and a quick glimpse into the vast diversity of NYC’s residents. Make sure to pack your appetite because there are more than enough mouthwatering places along this route – from authentic NY style pizza to fresh vegan sweets, fragrant fried dumplings, and insanely scrumptious cannoli’s.

Route Description for Foodies Walk

You should start at the corner of West 3rd Street and 6th Avenue. There is a basketball court here where you can sometimes see some really great streetball – check it out! Head south on 6th Avenue, in the direction of Bleecker Street (or away from West 4th Street). Stay on 6th for about 820ft or, if you’ve already worked up an appetite and are in the mood for some delicious NY style pizza, take the first right onto Carmine Street and stop at Joe’s Pizza. Trust us, it’s delicious.

Post pizza break, stay on 6th until you reach Bleecker Street and take a left. This is a nice residential street with plenty to see. Enjoy a relaxed stroll here and make sure to take in the sights and sounds. After one block you’ll see a super delicious vegan restaurant By Chloe on your left-hand side. They offer reasonably priced, plant-based foods with an emphasis on locally sourced, sustainable ingredients – yum. We do realize that after about 10 minutes of walking we’ve already suggested two places to eat, but that’s because this neighborhood is chock full of super bars and restaurants.

After you pass By Chloe, continue on Bleecker for another 656ft, until you reach LaGuardia Place. Take a right here. On your left hand side is the LaGuardia Corner Gardens, a community garden in the heart of Greenwich Village. In the warmer months you can stop in here and walk around a bit, finding a nice break from the dense urban surroundings.

Continue on LaGuardia Place, crossing over West Houston Street and take a left to stay on West Houston. Right on the corner of West Houston and West Broadway (previously LaGuardia) there are a few art galleries to check if you if you’re interested: the Russeck Gallery, Hugo Fine Arts Galerie, Rotella Gallery and Lumas New York SoHo Gallery.

Get back (or stay on) West Houston, going in the direction of Wooster Street. Follow this way for roughly 492ft, and take a right onto Greene Street. You’ll quickly be greeted with a lovely gray-brick street and beautiful architecture – you’re also officially in SoHo. On this street you’ll find a blend of high-end luxury brands and individual designer shops mixed in with eclectic art galleries.

You’re going to stay on Greene for about 1969ft, moving deeper into the heart of SoHo. When you reach Broome Street take a left. Throughout this section of the walk, feel free to just relax. Enjoy wandering down the beautiful streets and perhaps indulge on some unnecessary (and incredibly expensive) retail items. There aren’t many big sights to see here, rather just a great atmosphere. Stay on Broome for about 984ft, crossing over Mercer Street, Broadway, and Crosby Street. Take a right onto Lafayette Street.

You’ll notice the shop signs begin to change as you’ve transformed into what seems like another country, Chinatown. This neighborhood is home to the largest enclave of Chinese people in the western hemisphere. Stay on Lafayette for about 984ft until you run into Canal Street. Take a left here.

When greeted with hanging ducks in the shop windows it’s hard to imagine that just a short while ago you were on the swanky streets of Greenwich Village, but that’s what makes New York City so magical. Continue on Canal Street. If you’re in the mood for some bootleg Chanel purses, Burberry cologne or a t-shirt with some absolutely obscene phrase on it, this is the place to get it. Within the neighborhood you’ll also find Chinese-dominated grocery stores, fishmongers, jewelry shops and more.

Stay on Canal Street for about 492ft and take a right onto Mulberry Street. Like the previous section of this walk, there aren’t that many big sights to see here, but rather take in the atmosphere, it’s something truly unique and special. Continue on Mulberry for roughly 1312ft. Halfway through, the Columbus Park will be on your right-hand side. Stop here for a break if you like. You’ll find locals playing basketball on the courts and groups playing chess or Chinese checkers on the north end.

Continue on Mulberry until you reach Worth Street. Take a left onto Worth and then your first sharp left onto Mott Street to move back into the heart of Chinatown. After about 82ft, you’ll see a small basement restaurant called Wo Hop (not to be confused with Wo Hop City, which you will see first and is located at street level). If you can, stop in here. This is a NYC institution, serving delicious food late into the night. The fried dumplings here are out of this world.

Stay on Mott for another 984ft, crossing over Canal Street. Take a left onto Hester Street, the Welcome to Little Italy sign will be right in front. Stay on Hester for just 164ft and take a right onto Mulberry. If it’s a nice day enjoy a strong cappuccino, and perhaps a delicious cannoli, at one of the many sidewalk tables.

You’re going to stay on Mulberry for about 2625ft, until you reach Spring Street. Take a left here and hop on the subway to wherever you need to go or take a right and stop at Lombardi’s, America’s first pizzeria founded way back in 1905.

Insider Hints

  • This route is full of some of our favorite places to eat – skip breakfast today and bring your appetite.

  • If you really want to get the good bootleg stuff in Chinatown (though we don’t recommend it) ask the people on the street there and they’ll take you to a secret back room, and make sure you haggle.

  • This route is ideal for a warm sunny day, when you can totally take in the wonderful atmosphere.
