Regent's Canal from Edgware Road to Camden Town Walking Tour

There is something about walking through London following the Regent’s Canal that is just so rewarding. While it’s fun to head out west and follow the Regent’s Canal to Ladbroke Grove, this route to Camden Town takes in more popular sites. This is a locals walk, and is a great way to escape the crowds of Central London. You can also combine it with a return trip on a waterbus, which is a fun way to experience the Regent’s Canal.

Start at Edgware Road Station and go right onto Chapel Street and cross Edgware Road. If you have time, exploring Edgware Road is a fun experience; with a colourful past, the lower portion of Edgware road is full of very good Middle Eastern restaurants and shops. In summer the street is full of visitors escaping the heat in the Middle East .

After crossing Edgware Road walk along Praed Street before turning right towards Paddington Basin, a recent development of office blocks overlooking the tail end of the Regent’s Canal.

Cross over Paddington Basin and come to Lockhouse London, a pub serving well-crafted beer and food from early morning to late at night. There are also “Grab & Go” options available at the bar.

After crossing over Paddington Basin, take a left and follow along the water for 1148ft. Turn left to cross back over the water and then take a right, continuing along the water for 1969ft, passing under the Westway. You end up in Little Venice, a pretty little area full of canal boats. Follow the path around the left-hand portion of Little Venice, passing the Waterside Café inside a restaurant boat that serves food all day as well as traditional English afternoon tea. You will also pass the landing area for the waterbus that goes to London Zoo and Camden Lock.

Go Right over the bridge and continue to follow the path along the outer edge of Little Venice. You will pass under Warwick Avenue and continue along the Regent’s Canal for roughly 1.4 miles. Partway along this route the Canal goes through a tunnel and you walk straight onto Aberdeen Place. Follow the signs at the end of Aberdeen Place, passing by Crocker’s Folly, a Victorian pub featuring modern European cuisine. Where Aberdeen Place curves left go straight and come back to the Regent’s Canal. Continue along the canal to head into Regent’s Park.

You’ll notice the quality of homes increases greatly as you enter the edges of Regent’s Park. Just after passing the Regent’s Park Running Track on your right, turn right to cross over the canal. Go left onto the Outer Circle and follow the Outer Circle for 1640ft as you walk past the London Zoo. The London Zoo is a fun place, and definitely worth a visit. Continue past the Zoo and go left on the Broad Walk and cross back over Regent’s Canal.

Go right on the other side of the Canal and walk along the Canal. You’ll notice an oriental river boat on the other side of the Canal, this is the Feng Shang Princess, a fun restaurant. Continue walking along the Regent’s Canal, going under bridges.

Continue along the canal for 2133ft, you will see some graffiti on this stretch of the walk. Before you know it, you reach Camden Lock.

From here you can explore the famous Camden Market. Wander around Camden Market and see where your feet take you. It is a great hive of counter-cultural activity and it is filled with eclectic shops and places to eat. Some first-timers mistakenly think Camden Market is just the buildings around Camden Lock, however go north on Chalk Farm and under the train tracks and you’ll find more of the Market.

Once you are done wandering around Camden Market, make your way onto Chalk Farm or Camden High Street and head south, re-crossing over the Regent Canal at Camden Lock.

Continue on Camden High Street for about 984ft. The Elephants Head on Camden High Street is a good traditional Victorian pub with a jukebox and a long bar. If you are in the mood for some ice cream after your walk, enjoy a cone at Amorino Camden Town, also found on Camden High Street.

When you get to Camden Town Tube stop the walk is done. If you need a pint before heading home, The World’s End pub is a great stop.
