Explore Boise’s backyard and revel in the diversity of flora and fauna that occupy this swathe of wilderness along the Snowshoe Hare Loop via Ponderosa Pine Overlook Hike. From elk and mule deer to foxes and an extensive array of bird species, there is no shortage of wildlife to spot. In addition to the primitive ambiance, the limited traffic and tranquility of this route enable relaxation and reconnection with nature. While most of these trails in the forest are more populated in the summer season, this lovely circuit comes to life after snowfall. No matter the season, be sure to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.
Your journey begins from the trailhead off North Bogus Basin Road. Setting out from here, the Ponderosa Pine Overlook eastwardly into the forest. Gently climbing, the route offers views of the Dry Creek drainage below and the surrounding Boise Mountains. After some hiking, you will confront an intersection, keep left, and at the subsequent junction, you will veer left onto the Snowshoe Hare. Follow this circuit through the mixed woodlands that are so pleasantly carpeted with wildflowers in the spring and summer seasons.
Soon you will reach a crossroads with the Doug Fir Trail; keep right, hiking south to the next intersection. At this point, you will reconnect with the Ponderosa Pine Overlook Trail, which will deliver you back to the trailhead, ending your adventure.
