McMenemy Trail Description
Those seeking an intermediate adventure near Santa Barbara have come to the right place. This scenic route into the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains boasts wonderful scenery and epic views of the city in the foreground of the Pacific—on a clear day, you may even see the Channel Islands. Most of this hike is exposed, offering great views but extremely hot conditions, so SPF and plenty of water are required for afternoon adventures. Note if there is no parking at the trailhead, park in the lot off E Mountain Drive and walk in!
Setting out from the trailhead, the McMenemy Hike follows the San Ysidro Trail north to a junction. Here, veer left, and you will be diverted over San Ysidro Creek and onto the McMenemy Trail. This route will steeply climb via several switchbacks and up to an intersection. Turn right onto the Girard Trail, which boasts wonderful views of the coastal landscape. Continue trekking, turning left onto the Edison Catway at the next junction and left onto the Saddle Rock Trail at the following.
Now wandering south along the Saddle Rock Trail, you will confront yet another trail break. At this point, turn left, reconnecting with the McMenemy Trail. Hike this route east to the trail’s end at the intersection with San Ysidro Trail. At this point, simply turn right and retrace your footing along this route back to the trailhead.
