Figueroa Mountain Hike Description

Treat yourself with the Figueroa Mountain Hike. This epic expedition into the Transverse Range offers the ideal escape from the Santa Ynez Valley. Offering beautiful scenery and a great workout, this hike attracts plenty of traffic, so expect to share the route. If you are seeking a more secluded adventure, consider heading out in the early morning—which also warrants cooler conditions. If you are exploring in summer afternoons, be sure to pack plenty of water and wear SPF to beat the effects of the sun! Note much of the terrain is rocky and uneven—a sturdy pair of footwear will make a world of difference.

Charge your camera; the scenery along Figueroa Mountain offers countless epic photo opportunities. Though this route boasts picturesque scenes year-round, the best time to visit is in late March into early summer, notably after a rainy winter. This is because the mountainside blossoms with thousands of vibrant wildflowers, including California poppies, lupines, goldfields, and more. Equally as enchanting, winter expeditions sometimes see snow as the trail is located at a high elevation—be sure to dress accordingly. No matter the season, pack lunch and have a picnic atop the summit of Figueroa Mountain, reveling in the dramatic landscape.

Setting out from the trailhead off Figueroa Mountain Road, the Figueroa Mountain Hike follows the Forest Service Route 8N16. Meandering along the wide service road, you will be guided east through a corridor of impressive oaks and chaparral bushes. Gradually climbing along the cliffside, the sounds of traffic below will gradually fade, begin replaced only by the sounds of fellow adventurers, wind, and wildlife. Eventually, the path will redirect you northwestwardly, leading you along the rocky ridge bound by meadowlands.

In the springtime, your senses will be overwhelmed by the scene of the colorful field. Enjoy the wonderful scenery and sweet smell as you progress further up the mountain. Soon you will reach the Santa Ynez Overlook, which offers a panoramic view of the valley. Marvel in the scenery and begin your final push up to the summit of Figueroa Mountain. From here, you will be granted 360-degree views of the San Rafael Mountains that stretch for miles. Appreciate the grandeur of the mountainous landscape, and when you are ready, retrace your footing back along the route to the trailhead, marking the end of your adventure.
