Hiouchi Trail Description
Hiking this route affords anyone a good time. The scenery couldn’t get much better by offering a meander through redwoods and along the Smith River. The trail reminiscent of a fairy tale can be enjoyed by hikers of all skill levels and ages. Located so conveniently near Crescent City, this route attracts lots of traffic—so don’t be surprised if you have to share the trail! Note this path is subject to blowdown, so be prepared to do some scrambling!
Setting out from the trailhead, follow the Hatton Trail southeast. Soon after your departure, you will merge onto the Hiouchi Trail. The undulating path will drop dramatically down to the banks of the Smith River. Enjoy the sounds of the running waters and the sights of the beautiful river as you trek. Hugging the curves of the river, the winding path will reward you with impressive redwoods, lush ferns, wildflowers, and mushrooms that adorn the terrain—giving it a whimsical ambiance. As you near Stout Grove, the trees will grow in enormity.
Eventually, the path will divert you away from the river and along Mill Creek. We hiked briefly along the creek before turning around. To get back to the trailhead, simply retrace your footing back along the route.
