Pinyon Flats Campground Trail Description

Hiking the Pinyon Flats Campground Trail is a laid-back experience compared to most hikes within the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Though not as strenuous as most, this hike delivers awe-inspiring vistas of the sand dunes that dominate the western landscape and the snow-capped peaks of the Sangre de Cristo wilderness in the north. Explore the area’s flora and revel in the variety of Colorado’s terrain as you wander this stunning loop. Note that the National Park charges an entrance fee of $25USD for 1-6 passenger vehicles.

Embark on your adventure along the Pinyon Flats Campground Trail from the trailhead and parking lot off Highway 150. From here, head east tracking along the shoulder of Highway 150 before veering left onto Loop 1. Trek Loop 1 briefly before taking the connector trail up to Loop 2. Wander along the easternmost section of Loop 2, admiring views of the looming peaks as you head north. Soon the path will redirect you south, crossing over Garden Creek before veering right onto another connector trail.

At this point, you will want to keep right onto Loop 1, hiking north before curving south again. As you meander, the sights of the forested campsites overlooking the dunes will inspire you to book a site the next time you visit. Soon you will reach the initial intersection you confronted. Here, retrace your footing along the shoulder of the road back to the parking lot.
