Coconino Overlook via North Kaibab Trail Description
The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is a less-visited gem for hikers who want all the scenery with far lighter crowds. The hike to the Coconino Overlook on North Kaibab Trail is a 3.7mi adventure that leads you through unforgettable scenery as you scale down the wall of this mighty canyon. Thankfully, this one won’t tire you out quite as much as some of the longer, more intense hikes in the canyon.
On this hike, you’ll pass breathtaking viewpoints and look out over a sea of buttes and mesas. Even though this is a quick hike, it’s still good to prepare for the varied weather at the North Rim. It can be very hot in the summer and very snowy in the winter, so bring water and extra layers if needed.
From the trailhead, you’ll descend down into Bright Angel Canyon. You’ll only need to hike three-quarters of a mile to get to the viewpoint, so take your time on the steep switchbacks and admire the view. Arriving at the Coconino Overlook, look down into the Roaring Springs Canyon and at the massive canyon beyond. From here, retrace your steps to the trailhead.
