Apache Tears Mine Hike

The hike to the Apache Tears Mine has a bit of everything in the scenery. See the saguaros that stand tall over the desert, get some shade by the creek, and dig for obsidian at the old mine. It’s an especially fun hike for kids, but adventurers of all ages will be able to enjoy it.

From the trailhead, follow the signage to Perlite Road heading south. You’ll follow this to a complex junction where you’ll take the second trail on the right, which leads to the mine. The views are quite pleasant, but most of the trail is in the sun and if it’s hot out, you’ll be glad you packed extra water.

At the mine, dig around a bit for flecks of obsidian. There are lots of neat rocks to check out. While Leave No Trace principles suggest you leave the rocks for the next hikers to enjoy, you’ll notice people pocket one or two to take home. When you’re ready, retrace your steps to the trailhead.
