The Walrod Loop Trail is a fun hiking route near Crested Butte South, Colorado that will take you uphill above a valley for views overlooking Cement Creek. While out hiking the trail, you will make a steep ascent of the hillside to visit a series of rock caves, before traversing the elevated positions and making the return loop through the valley alongside Cement Creek. There isn’t much protection from the sun on this trail, so be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen and water!

The starting point for the Walrod Loop Trail can be found at the Caves Trailhead along FS-740.

Walrod Loop Trail Description
Hiking the Walrod Loop Trail is a fun experience that features an intense climb, interesting geological formations, and scenic views of the valley landscape, making for a great day of exploring the landscape of the Elk Mountains.
Setting out from the parking area, you will head north across the road and pass by the information board to begin the steep climb up through the gully that will bring you above the valley. Here, you will have some nice views across the surrounding landscape and have the chance to explore a series of rock caves.
From here, you will traverse the elevated position above the valley and enjoy some scenic views overlooking the woodlands and Cement Creek below, before heading down towards the valley floor through Walrod Gulch. Here, you will turn to the southwest along a trail that runs parallel to the road and Cement Creek, following it back to the trailhead where you began your adventure.
