Lee Abbey and Exmoor Coast Walk

The Lee Abbey and Exmoor Coast Walk is a pretty easy route to navigate; however, there are some very steep sections of the trail that will not be suitable for less-mobile walkers. Be sure to wear sturdy walking boots for the best footing along the trail and take your time through these areas. If you are walking with a dog, be sure to keep them on a lead, as there are free-roaming mountain goats in the vicinity. Additionally, the location of this walk along the coast makes it exposed to the elements, so don’t forget to bring an extra layer to keep the wind at bay.

All of these things considered, this is an amazing walking route that should absolutely be on your list if you find yourself in the Lynton area. Stunning coastal views, historic buildings, charming villages, and interesting wildlife make every moment on this short route a memorable one.

Setting out from the trailhead, make your way to the west along the road for 0.2mi and pick up the footpath at the edge of the roundabout. Follow this to the southwest and enjoy the stunning views of the coastal landscape, vibrant green slopes, and rocky terrain surrounding you, as you eventually arrive at a junction with the road in 0.3mi. Turn right and continue along the road for 0.3mi, passing by the impressive Gothic-style buildings of Lee Abbey on your right, as you gently descend the hillside with a breathtaking view of the coast in front of you.

When you reach a laneway branching off to the left, follow it and keep left at the next two junctions to pass through the forest and begin climbing up the steep hillside. After 0.5mi along this trail, turn right at the junction to continue climbing further uphill, keeping an eye out for the mountain goats that freely roam the rugged landscape here. Once you have reached the hilltop, spend a few moments to enjoy the stunning views of the coastal landscape and the Bristol Channel before you.

From here, continue to the northwest along the trail for 0.53mi to descend the hillside and arrive at another junction. Heading left through the woodland landscape to meet back up with the road. Turn left here and follow the road back to the car park where you began the Lee Abbey and Exmoor Coast Walk.

Lee Abbey

Lee Abbey is an ecumenical Christian Community that is situated along the coast just outside of the town of Lynton. The Gothic Revival style buildings date back to the 1850s and since that time have been used for various purposes. These include a failed hotel and a boys school that was relocated there during the Second World War. The buildings were purchased in 1946 and renovated to their current state and usage as a Christian School.
