Loweswater and Holme Wood Walk Description
The Loweswater and Holme Wood Walk is a fun activity that will take you through a variety of terrain that includes stretches of woodland, as well as boggy areas of open farmland that are dissected by streams. Be sure to wear good walking footwear in order to traverse this terrain. Additionally, livestock will likely be roaming the area around this trail, so make sure to keep any dogs on a leash to avoid an encounter.
Setting out from the car park, follow the road west towards the shores of Loweswater, entering into the thick cover of the forest to walk along the edge of the lake. Make your way north through Holme Wood and enjoy the intermittent views across the calm surface of the water before exiting the shady canopy to cross the open farmland to the northwest. Here, you will climb gradually uphill until you meet up with a wide track. Turn to the southeast and follow this further uphill, enjoying the scenic views of the Solway Firth and the Irish Sea behind you to the north as you continue to gain elevation. Continue across the open terrain to the southeast, with the wooded expanse of Holme Wood on your left and the rugged landscape of the Lake District on your right, eventually crossing over the waters of Holme Beck. Continue along the edge of the forest as you descend the hill, following the trail as it shifts towards the northeast along Highnook Beck and leads you back to the trailhead where you began your walk.
