Wansfell Pike & Troutbeck Tongue Walk Description
Walking the Wansfell Pike & Troutbeck Tongue Trail is a scenic Lake District activity that will take you through a variety of terrain, including stretches of boggy ground that can sometimes be knee deep. There’s no easy way to get around this, other than attempting the route on a hot/dry day and wearing water-resistant walking shoes to combat the mud. Muddy conditions aside, this trail is great for taking in some amazing views overlooking Windermere.
Setting out from the trailhead, follow the road to the southwest and turn right to make your way up the steep hillside and carefully navigate the rugged terrain toward the summit of Wansfell Pike. Once there, you will be able to enjoy some breathtaking views over the surrounding landscape that include Ambleside to the west and Windermere to the southwest. Continue along the trail to the northeast and traverse the ridge along Baystones before descending the hillside towards the road. Once there, cross over to the other side and follow the route down to the edge of Trout Beck before climbing back up the hillside to the summit of Troutbeck Tongue. Here, you will have some views across the valley that include the peaks that you just summited to the southwest. Continue south along the trail and make your way downhill, eventually return alongside Trout Beck to the trailhead where you began the walk.
