South Burgundy Wine Route by Bike Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival

Arrive in Burgundy’s famous wine capital, Beaune, where you’ll find a whimsical town with deep historical roots and artistic heritage. Check into your hotel here, then perhaps visit the impressive Musée du Vin de Bourgogne for some introductory insights into Burgundy’s fascinating wine culture, which is entrenched in the region’s history.

Day 2 Cycle Loop to Côte de Nuits

This morning following breakfast, you’ll rise ready to take on your first of Burgundy’s famous wine regions as you embark on a spectacular loop to Côte de Nuits. With abundant vineyards sown with the Pinot Noir grape, you’ll find yourself at the heart of Burgundy wine production.

Cycle to the impressive Chateau Clos du Vougeot, where you’ll revel in the magical vistas of rolling vineyards as far as the eye can see. Today you’ll also lay eyes on the vineyards of Romanée Conti, where some of the world’s most expensive wines are produced.

Day 3 Ride through the Côte de Beaune to Chassey-le-Camp

Today another delightful wine area of Burgundy is yours to discover as you pedal through the Côte de Beaune to Chassey-le-Camp. Here the dominant grape is the white Chardonnay, used to produce the fine Meursault and Montrachet wines.

Continue through spellbinding wine villages at the very heart of South Burgundy as you cruise through
Pommard, Meursault, and Chassagne-Montrachet. A final stretch takes you along the Canal du Centre bike path through Santenay and finally to tonight’s overnight accommodations in Chassey-le-Camp.

Day 4 Cycle the Voie Verte Bike Path to Saint-Boil

Another beautiful bike path paves the way to Saint-Boil today as you set out into the rolling vineyards. You’ll take in the gorgeous vines of the Côte Chalonnaise, hopping off your bikes to take in the impressive castles of Rully along the way. It goes without saying that a wine tasting or two along the way is never a bad idea!

Enjoy a break at a local winegrower to savour some red Mercury before continuing via the medieval town of Buxy to Saint-Boil.

Day 5 The Chateau de Cormatin

This morning you’ll return to the scenic paths of the Voie Verte bike path for a nice light ride to Cluny, first bound for the Chateau de Cormatin, where you’ll discover a fortress containing well-preserved interiors that date back to the reign of King Louis the 13th (1628).

Hop off your bikes to take in the splendour of the castle and its impressive gardens, then continue the route to the beautiful town of Cluny, known for its remarkable 10th-century Roman Abbey.

Day 6 Cycle Rolling Hills to Tournus

Prepare for a joy ride today on a route that unfolds on gently rolling hills, leading you to Tournus via Europe's longest underpass. Emerging from the underpass, you'll encounter the magical Berzé-le-Châtel, a breathtaking fortress encased in the gorgeous vineyards of Mâconnai. Words simply won't do the scenery here justice, and you'll come to realize this as you cross the lovely Saint Laurent Bridge through the charming village of Mâcon.

Joining the Voie Bleue bike path, you'll take in several beautiful villages and impressive Roman churches on your final stretch to the medieval town of Tournus.

Day 7 Departure
