Walk the Camino dos Faros of coastal Spain from Ponteceso to Finisterre
Camiño dos Faros – The Lighthouse Way spans approximately 200 kilometers, connecting Malpica to Finisterre, and showcases the prominent role of the sea in ancient pilgrimages. The Camino dos Faros offers breathtaking views of lighthouses and monuments along the Costa da Morte.
Comprising eight stages, the allure of the surroundings often compels hikers to pause and savor the scenic paradise. The emphasis is not on reaching the destination swiftly but on relishing the entire experience, making a leisurely pace advisable.
The Camino dos Faros unfolds along the coastal stretch, featuring numerous beaches that run alongside steep cliffs. The Camiño dos Faros is also known as The Lighthouse Way, and the trail traverses virgin beaches and a rugged coastline, offering an unforgettable adventure. Notably, the route passes through areas where the world's finest "percebes" are harvested, a delicacy cultivated by the relentless waves crashing against the rocks. Stops include O Roncudo, where "percebeiros" risk their lives for this Galician gastronomic treasure.
Along your Camino, you will explore historically significant sites such as the English cemetery in Camariñas and the enigmatic "pedra de abalar" at the Santuario da Virxe da Barca. Nature enthusiasts can appreciate not only the beaches, dunes, cliffs, and forests but also estuaries teeming with native birdlife.
The ultimate destination, Cape Fisterra, long considered the end of the world and reached by Décimo Junio Bruto in the 16th century, holds a magical allure. This is where the Celts paid homage to the sun, offering a splendid view of the Atlantic and the rugged Galician coast. Cape Fisterra is also regarded as the conclusive point of the Camino de Santiago.
While Cape Fisterra may not be the literal end of the world, it serves as an unparalleled destination for a nine-day hike through the natural paradise of the Costa da Morte, the mythical Coast of Death.
