Glacier National Park
Montana’s Glacier National Park is one of America’s finest natural spaces, combining big mountains, glaciers, stunning lakes and some of the best hiking in North America. The park is made accessible by the Going-to-the-Sun Road, a drive everybody should do at least once in their life. Glacier is a bucket list destination and should be in consideration for your next holiday.
Glacier National Park is often referred to as the Crown of the Continent, with waters from the park flowing west to the Pacific, south to the Gulf of Mexico and east to the Hudson Bay. The stunning mountains, valleys, lakes and streams make a trip in Glacier a feast for your eyes and the untouched beauty makes for epic summer hiking and backpacking adventures.
In addition to hiking and backpacking, there is also great mountain biking just outside the park, near the town of Whitefish. Road bikers flock to Glacier National Park before the roads open to vehicles in the warmer months. One of the best rides is the Going-to-the-Sun Road, where if you can catch it before it opens to vehicles, is one of America’s great rides. Although there are no cars, beware of the local bear population coming out of hibernation!
Nearby to the park is the town of Whitefish, a great town to base your vacation from. Whitefish is especially great in winter, when the nearby Whitefish ski hill is open. Legendary light powder and few crowds mean Whitefish is heaven for downhill skiers. You can also explore Glacier on skis and snowshoes in winter if you prefer a more tranquil experience.
