The Lamar River Stock Trail is a short and sweet hiking circuit in Yellowstone National Park. This trail is relatively flat and appropriate for hikers of all ages and abilities. The Lamar Valley is a great spot to see wildlife including bison, elk, and pronghorn.
Getting there
This hike begins at the Lamar River Stock Trailhead on the southside of Northeast Entrance Road, approximately 14.0mi east of Tower Junction in Yellowstone National Park.

Lamar River Stock Trail Description
The Lamar River Stock Trail is an easy hiking circuit down to the banks of the Lamar River. This trail can get buggy, especially in the early summer. If you are hiking in June or July, be sure to bring some bug spray or wear long layers to deter the mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not the only critters you’ll see on this trail. The Lamar Valley is famous for its abundance of wildlife. Bison, elk, pronghorn, wolves, and bears are all seen in this valley. Bring along a canister of bear spray on your hike and keep an eye out for animals on the trail. If you do encounter wildlife: do not approach or feed them, and admire all animals from a safe and respectful distance.
Beginning at the Lamar River Stock Trailhead, follow the path south to the river and head east along the riverbank before looping back up to the road. From the road, simply follow the trail west back to the trailhead where you began.
