Howard Eaton and Lone Star Trail Description
The Howard Eaton and Lone Star Trail is a great way to see Yellowstone National Park. This route is moderately challenging and begins with a steep climb. Proper, supportive hiking footwear is essential for this route, and we recommend bringing along a set of hiking poles for some extra support. The first mile or so of this hike might knock the wind out of your sails but don’t worry, the trail flattens out, and the rest is smooth sailing. The main attraction along this trail is the Lone Star Geyser: an impressive, 12ft geyser that erupts approximately every three hours. When the Lone Star Geyser erupts, it shoots scalding-hot water up 45ft into the air.
Beginning at the Old Faithful Ranger Station, cross over Old Faithful Road and Grand Loop Road, then take the trail on your left. Follow the trail as it runs parallel to Grand Loop Road and crosses over Myriad Creek. Just past the creek, the trail will divert from the road. Follow the Howard Eaton Trail southeast to a divide. At the divide, take the path on your left to make your way a short distance to the Lone Star Geyser.
Stick around for the eruption of the Lone Star Geyser, then continue along the trail as it follows the Firehole River up to the Lone Star Trailhead. From the Lone Star Trailhead, cross back over Grand Loop Road, then take the Kepler Cascade Ski Trail back to the Old Faithful Visitors Center where you began.
