Difficulty Rating:
Spider Meadow Trail is a great pick for a longer (but not too difficult) day trip or as part of a backpacking excursion. At 13.6mi, the trail offers lots of length, but the elevation gain is largely gradual and the most intense climbing is saved for the end. Cutting out the final ascent to Larch Knob makes this trail more family-friendly. Expect light traffic on this route.

Spider Meadow Trail Description
Spider Meadow Trail is a pretty, mostly related route through a valley with flower-filled meadows all around. We recommend doing this hike in the early summer when the blooms are at their best. You can do this as a day hike or as part of a backpacking trip. Please note that the road to the trailhead is extremely bumpy and potholed and a high-clearance vehicle is essential.
Begin from the Phelps Creek Trailhead. Cross the creek and stay left where the trail forks. It’s a very gradual and relaxed hike just above the creek, passing through beautiful meadows as you go. You’ll pass the Spider Meadow camping area and then begin to climb towards Larch Knob camping.
Those wanting a relaxed trip may wish to turn around before the ascent to the campground. This quick and steep push is where the majority of the elevation gain occurs. If you want a challenge, go for it. If not, turn around and retrace your steps to the trailhead.
