Seven Fingered Jack is a hike suitable for experienced hikers who are comfortable with loose rocky scrambles that lack a defined trail. It’s a 12.3mi hike with hefty vertical gain and it only sees light traffic. If this trail seems like too much, try nearby Mount Maude, which is still a tough hike but offers more manageable scrambles.

Seven Fingered Jack Hike Description

Seven Fingered Jack (often shortened as 7FJ) is a challenging objective and the hike to the top via Phelps Creek Trail will stretch you technically and physically. That said, the views are sublime and it’s a very fun adventure. Come prepared for a long trail with scrambling up to Class III required. Poles are recommended.

Beginning from the Phelps Creek Trailhead, enjoy a more relaxed 3.0mi start. Once you turn up Leroy Creek (staying right at the junction and taking care if the water level is high), you’ll begin to quickly and aggressively gain elevation. Enjoy the views in the basin as you navigate past the camping area. Go straight at the junction for Carne and Maude and begin a grueling straight-up climb. The route isn’t always obvious at all, so keep an eye on your GPS and take it easy over the loose rock.Enjoy the views at the well-earned summit. Coming down is a treat, of course. You’ll need to pick your way down the loose rocks back to the trail and then retrace your steps to the trailhead.
