New York Mountain Trail Description
Immerse yourself in Colorado’s high country along the New York Mountain Trail. This stunning expedition reveals sweeping vistas of the Sawatch Mountain Range’s snow-capped peaks, verdant woodlands, and charming alpine lakes. Reserved for experienced adventurers and intrepid spirits, this hike does possess some technical scrambles near the summit, so be sure to wear microspikes in the fall and winter months to help navigate the snow-packed terrain more easily. We also suggest departing before dawn to reach the peak before noon, which will lessen the chances of getting caught in an afternoon storm.
Departing from the trailhead, the New York Mountain Trail will guide adventurers through the woodlands. Enjoy the shade of the looming pines, as you wander to the New York Lake Trailhead. From this point, the route will become increasingly technical, exposed, and primitive, so the trail GPS may come in handy. Navigate the switchbacks up through the vibrant alpine terrain and let the expansive mountain views motivate you to ascend the mountain slope. After scrambling up the scree, you will summit New York Mountain.
From atop the peak, revel in the 360-degree panoramic vistas of the neighboring snow-capped peaks that flank the verdant woodlands below. When you are done admiring the grandeur of the scenery, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
