Those seeking a route that showcases the famous San Francisco landmarks will love this adventure. Traveling along sidewalks and coastal footpaths, this route offers a diversity of scenery as it passes by several historic sites and overlooks. Note there are many route changes and intersections that are confusing and poorly marked, so the use of the trail GPS is necessary. Additionally, much of the route is exposed, so wear SPF and wear a windbreaker! Those with vehicles will have to leave a car at the route’s end or arrange for pickup.
Setting out from the Ferry Building, the Ferry Building to Ocean Beach Hike follows the Herb Caen Way past several piers to Fisherman’s Wharf. Explore the famous wharf, then follow the sidewalk along Jefferson Street. Passing through Aquatic Park and Fort Mason, you will be granted impressive views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. Soon you will enter Presidio Park, which wanders past several historic batteries that overlook the Pacific.
Revel in the scenes of the ocean as you pass over Baker Beach and cross into the Lands End Park. Nearing your adventure’s end, you will pass the Sutro Baths before reaching Ocean Beach. Stroll along the seashore, and you will reach your endpoint at Judah Street.
