Granite Mountain Trail Description
The Granite Mountain Trail is definitely found near the top of our favorite Idaho hikes. While some shy away from rocky, exposed meadow-laden trails, we thrive on them. The uneven terrain keeps us engaged and alert, and the seasonal wildflowers that adorn the fields are an added bonus. While this trek isn’t overly taxing, the exposed and steep terrain will tire you, so make sure to bring along plenty of water to stay hydrated along the way. Don’t forget your camera, the scenery from the summit is quite photogenic.
Setting out from the Twin Lakes Trailhead, the Granite Mountain Hike follows the Granite Mountain Trail southwardly, climbing into the wilderness abundant with wildlife and wildflowers. Minding your footing on the rocky terrain, you will soon come to an intersection, keep left here, maintaining along the Granite Mountain Trail. Continue climbing, and you will eventually reach a campsite overlooking the Twin Lakes. From here, you begin your final push up to Granite Mountain through brush and rock gardens.
When you ultimately reach the summit of Granite Mountain, you will be rewarded with spellbinding scenery. Revel in the 360-degree panoramic views of the Idaho Mountains. Though tempting, the lookout tower is off-limits unless you are explicitly invited up by a ranger. When you are through indulging in the beautiful vistas, head back down the way you came to the trailhead.
