Difficulty Rating:
The Spruce Nature Trail is an easy trail in Olympic National Park that sees heavy traffic. It’s nestled next to the Hoh River in the much-visited Hoh Rainforest, a great example of coastal temperate rainforest in Washington. This hike is simple but can be combined with other intersecting trails to extend your fun if you’d like.
We recommend visiting the Hoh Rainforest in off-peak hours to avoid needing to line up for parking.
Getting there
The trailhead for the Spruce Nature Trail is just in front of the Hoh Rainforest Visitor Center.

Spruce Nature Trail Description
The Spruce Nature Trail is a lovely walk along the river and through the coastal rainforest that is suitable for beginners and the whole family. You can also explore the other nearby trails in the Hoh Rainforest easily from this route.
The Hoh Rainforest gets very busy so we recommend visiting during the week or before 9 AM on the weekend if possible.
Start from the trailhead in front of the visitor center. The trail crosses the river and then heads right (take your furthest right). You can hike either way, but we’ll describe it clockwise. Go left at the fork and walk through the rainforest, admiring the mossy trees and tall ferns.
Reaching the Hoh River, the trail curves southwest and follows the water for a stretch. You’ll then turn away from the river and hike back through the rainforest, crossing a stream before reaching the junction. Go back across the stream to reach the parking lot.
