Difficulty Rating:
The Okanagan Rail Trail is a fantastic route that attracts locals and visitors alike! If you’re craving a fusion of exercise and constant views of Kalamalka Lake’s never-ending reel of green and blue hues before fading into the darker Wood Lake, there’s no other place to be than the relatively flat Rail Trail. Plus, you can turn around whenever you want—there’s no need to do it all in one day.
Getting there
To reach the Okanagan Rail Trail’s starting point from downtown Vernon, you’ll need to head towards BC-6 before turning right on Kalamalka Lake Road. Follow this road until you reach the Rail Trail Cafe, situated next to Kal Beach. Turn right onto Westkal Road and after several hundred metres, you’ll reach the parking lot for the Rail Trail.

Okanagan Rail Trail Description
The Okanagan Rail Trail in Vernon, BC, is a popular family-friendly walk—and for good reason! Locals and visitors can’t help but fall in love with the shimmering lake views and collection of beachside swim spots along this relatively flat, mostly paved trail. One of the best parts about this trail is that you can choose to go for as long as you want. If you don’t plan on walking all the way to Wood Lake (which would be a long day), we advise starting in Vernon rather than Lake Country due to Kalamalka Lake’s photo-ready, vibrant hues! Expect to share this trail with bikers, families, dogs, rollerbladers, and the occasional skateboarder. Enjoy paved roads almost all of the way from Vernon to Lake Country.
If you do plan on walking the entire Okanagan Rail Trail, it’s a good idea to either look into staying at Kekuli Bay Provincial Park, booking a hotel in Lake Country, or dropping off a car at either end of the path.
