The Belfast Castle and Ben Madigan Circular Walk is a fun and beautifully scenic adventure that visits a number of different highlights and produces beautiful views of Belfast. While out walking the trail, you will pass by Belfast Castle and the Belfast Zoo, before climbing uphill to the top of Cave Hill - historically known as Ben Madigan - for sweeping views of the area. There is a bit of uphill walking involved in this adventure, but it is perfectly suited for the whole family.

The trailhead for the Belfast Castle and Ben Madigan Circular Walk can be found at a small car park just 0.1mi to the southwest of Belfast Castle.

Featuring gorgeous views of Belfast and its surrounding area, key historical sites like the 19th Century Belfast Castle and an ancient hilltop structure known as McArt’s Fort, as well as the nearby Belfast Zoo; this is truly an amazing walking route that can be enjoyed by the entire family.
Setting out from the trailhead at Belfast Castle, you will make your way to the west to traverse the steep slopes of Cave Hill, climbing uphill to gain an amazing perspective overlooking Belfast. From here, you will continue on to the northeast, passing by the ancient hilltop site of McArt’s Fort, as you descend the hillside towards the Belfast Zoo. Here, you will follow the trail as it turns sharply to the southeast and passes by the zoo, continuing downhill until you arrive back at the extravagant grounds and gardens of Belfast Castle.
