The Dead Horse Rim Loop and Big Horn Overlook Trail is a fantastic day-hike in the southern section of Dead Horse Point State Park. This hike gets relatively low traffic and offers hikers some incredible views along a well-maintained trail. This hike is dog-friendly, but pups must be kept on a maximum of 6ft-long leash for the duration of their hike.
Getting there
The Dead Horse Rim Loop and Big Horn Overlook Trail begins at the West Rim Trailhead off of highway 313 at the southern end of Dead Horse Point State Park.

The Dead Horse Rim Loop and Big Horn Overlook Trail is a fantastic hike that connects several trails and overlooks in Dead Horse Point State Park. Bring lots of water and snacks with you—this hike has some beautiful sections, and you’ll want to take your time exploring around the Park. Dogs are allowed in Dead Horse Point State Park but they must be kept on leash at all times, and their leash cannot be longer than 6ft. This trail sees little traffic, so it’s a great place to get out with the family (and the dog) and sample the beauty that this State Park has to offer.
From the West Rim Trailhead, follow the path to your right to hike the loop clockwise. Follow the path for 1.2mi to a divide—you can take the trail on the left here for a quick out and back to the Shafer Canyon Overlook. Continue on for another 0.7mi to the next divide where you can do another out-and-back to the Rim Overlook. 0.3mi down the trail from the Rim Overlook the trail divides again, The path on the left will take you 1.1mi up to the Big Horn Overlook. The loop continues on for another 2.2mi, passing by one more out-and-back viewpoint trail to the Basin Overlook.
The Dead Horse Rim Loop and Big Horn Overlook Trail will then wind up back at the West Rim Trailhead, marking the end of this hike.
