Route Description for Callander Crags

From the Callander Crags car park, pass the barrier and information board, following the red route-marker-posts. Initially following a wide forest track, the red route soon breaks off to the right; it breaks off onto a narrower footpath that begins a steep ascent. Follow this path as it switchbacks up towards the crags.

As you near the top, the path emerges from the woodland to a recently cleared area. Climb the stone steps to reach the top of the Crags.

Once on top you will find a ‘T’ junction; turn right for a short detour to the Jubilee Cairn. The cairn was erected in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. From here the views are exceptional, it is possible to see the Wallace Monument near Stirling, the flatter plains in the south, and the rolling hills to the north.

From here retrace your steps to the point where you joined the crags, continue ahead to follow the fence line gently down along the top of the Crags. Look out for the Highland cattle grazing on the moorland to your right. Follow the path as it descends into the woodland, with views down to the pretty town of Callander.

As houses come into sight the path veers sharply left, and it swings back up into the woodland. There is a path branching off to the right that heads into Callander, ignore this. Following the red markers, this path leads you back to the car park and the start of the hike.

Insider Hints

  • If you’re looking for something else to do, you can head to Bracklinn Falls. It’s just a short walk/drive further up Bracklin Road. You’ll follow the trail to the falls.

  • Consider stopping in at the Co-op Food in Callander and picking up a picnic to enjoy at the Jubilee Cairn on the walk.

  • Callander is lovely place for a wander and café stop, particularly Mhor café!

  • This walk can also be completed from Callander, just join route at bottom of Crags and follow signs.

The loop was awesome. It was a good adventure for the whole family. My children were not very fond of the cattle, because they were scared. But overall it was an awesome trip.

The hike was not that long but super amusing. This place is a very popular picnic destination for families. Might as well do the same next time!

Nice and easy hike in the park. This one is not very crowded and easy to navigate. The trail was pretty straightforward too, so it's almost impossible to get lost.

we have done the Callander crags and the Bracklinn falls. The first part was nicer. But it made a longer walk altogether.

We had a great family walk! Got very lucky with the weather. We loved the fact that the walk was circular and the views were amazing.
