Callander Crags hike

From the Callander Crags car park, pass the barrier and information board, following the red route-marker-posts. Initially following a wide forest track, the red route soon breaks off to the right; it breaks off onto a narrower footpath that begins a steep ascent. Follow this path as it switchbacks up towards the crags.

As you near the top, the path emerges from the woodland to a recently cleared area. Climb the stone steps to reach the top of the Crags.

Once on top you will find a ‘T’ junction; turn right for a short detour to the Jubilee Cairn. The cairn was erected in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. From here the views are exceptional, it is possible to see the Wallace Monument near Stirling, the flatter plains in the south, and the rolling hills to the north.

From here retrace your steps to the point where you joined the crags, continue ahead to follow the fence line gently down along the top of the Crags. Look out for the Highland cattle grazing on the moorland to your right. Follow the path as it descends into the woodland, with views down to the pretty town of Callander.

As houses come into sight the path veers sharply left, and it swings back up into the woodland. There is a path branching off to the right that heads into Callander, ignore this. Following the red markers, this path leads you back to the car park and the start of the hike.
